Improvement or replacement of the outdated and inaccessible leisure centre was a top priority for residents after undergoing a community consultation process.

The brand new leisure centre, which opened in July 2025, was extremely well received, offering a range of leisure and health facilities including a 100-station gym, immersive group cycling studio, 25m swimming pool with learner pool and Innerva wellness suite with power-assisted equipment. Other facilities include TAGactive, soft play, a treatment room, a multi-purpose room for community activities and a café with a viewing gallery for the swimming pool.

The low-carbon facility features sustainable technologies such as solar PV panels and air source heat pumps.

Clay Cross Active also acts as an integrated hub, with NHS maternity clinics and services such as Citizens Advice operating from within the centre.

Delivering a brand-new community hub was always going to have its challenges, but when the main contractor suddenly went into administration halfway through the build, it could have meant the end of this scheme.

It’s thanks to the dedication of our team, the strong collaboration between our partners and the flexibility of the UK Leisure Framework, managed by Denbighshire Leisure Limited, that we were able to act quickly, onboard a new contractor and deliver this transformational project for North East Derbyshire.
