Leek’s historic indoor market has reopened to the public following a £3.4 million refurbishment, led by Alliance Leisure, aimed at preserving its position at the heart of the Staffordshire Moorlands community for generations to come.
The project involved a comprehensive renovation of the Victorian Butter and Trestle Markets, with the goal of attracting a wider range of customers and traders, while also providing flexible spaces for creative, artistic and community use.
Key improvements included:
- Installation of three new food and beverage lock-up units
- Creation of a new entranceway, enabling the two market halls to operate independently and allowing for evening and weekend events to be held in the Trestle Market
- Restoration of the Butter Market Hall’s Victorian shopfronts, enhancing the customer experience and offering modern, flexible retail spaces
- Installation of Wi-Fi, CCTV, heating and insulation to enhance comfort and safety
- Replacement of traditional trestle tables with lighter-weight alternatives for ease of use
With the council’s Net Zero ambitions in mind, sustainability was a core focus throughout. The scheme included the installation of solar panels, air source heat pumps, and a replacement insulated roof on the Trestle Market to improve energy efficiency.
